YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Young Harris College began the men's lacrosse program the right way as the Mountain Lions defeated Point University 23-2 in their first-ever men's lacrosse match Friday (Feb. 8) afternoon at the Frances Wood Wilson Soccer Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 1-0 while the Skyhawks, who were also played their first-ever intercollegiate match, fell to 0-1. Young Harris returns to action Feb. 16 when they travel to Mount Olive, N.C., for a noon match against Mount Olive College.
It took all of 79 seconds for Young Harris to score its first-ever goal as Jeff Rivait scored off an assists by Ronnie Adams. It was the first of 16 consecutive goals for the Mountain Lions, who outscored Point 60-8.
Ryan Ningard led the Mountain Lions with six goals for the Mountain Lions, who broke the game open with a nine-while Reed Wilkinson, Rivait, Chris Campaneria and Andrew Kim each contributed two. Eight others – Adams, Mike Matthews, Matt York, Matt Amell, Joe Appolonia, Tanner Shepardson, Mason McBroom, Marcus Lindquist and Kevin Daly – registered a strike for Young Harris.
Adams had a total of three assists while Matthews and York had two. Appolonia, NIngard, Rivait, Shepardson and Wilkinson each tallied an assist. Amell won 19 of the 23 face-offs for the Mountain Lions with Tyler Bramblett and Shepardson each caused three turnovers while Amell (11) and Lindquist (10) each had double figures in ground balls.
